At Hansen & Rosasco, LLP, we try to understand how difficult it is to make end-of-life decisions. We have supported 9/11 survivors and their families since 2001, offering the support, guidance, and comfort needed as they undergo treatments or decide to enter into hospice care.

If you lost a loved one due to a 9/11-related illness, cancer, or chronic disabling breathing condition, you now have more time to file a death claim with the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). The Victim Compensation Fund recently extended the deadline for grieving families to collect the compensation they deserve. Even if the VCF denied your past 9/11 deceased compensation claim, you now have until July 31, 2021, to file a claim.

A retired Army Reservist Captain, New York Police Lieutenant, National Guard Officer, an intelligence officer. All four titles have been earned by one man – Anthony Caruso. This man has experienced 9/11 full circle – from the attack on the World Trade Center to serving in the war in Iraq. And Anthony Caruso still feels the effects of the 9/11 experience.

The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) and World Trade Center Health Program cover approximately 70 cancers, considered “VCF covered conditions,” which provide free health care to eligible first responders, residents, employees and students who were in Lower Manhattan at the time of the terrorist attacks and in the months after. One condition not considered a VCF covered condition yet, however, exclusively affects women: uterine cancer. This has gone without much comment or observation – until recently.

Turley Hansen & Rosasco, LLP and the entire 9/11 community are mourning the passing of a retired NYPD Officer who unfortunately succumbed to his 9/11 cancer in late October. It is a terrible loss for the entire community, especially in light of the increase in recent years of the passing of those who were first responders or served in the recovery efforts at Ground Zero who suffered from a 9/11 cancer.

Amid the toxic fumes at Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Nick and Margaret Ursta had just one face mask to filter contaminants in the air, so they took turns wearing it.

Today, 18 years later, we remember every person whose life was impacted by the September 11th attacks. Mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, children and friends – whose lives were taken on this tragic day.

On average, the timeline to process your VCF claim is two years from the date your VCF claim is “fully submitted” to the date you receive your award payout. We will process your claim as soon as possible so that you and/or your family receive your award as soon as possible. 

This is a significant but sad day for the entire 9/11 community. President Donald Trump just signed the permanent extension of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. The new Zadroga Act has been renamed the “Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer, and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the September 11 Victim Compensation Act”.

Many individuals and families have been waiting for this day for many years. On Tuesday, July 23, 2019 – the Senate gathered to vote on a bill to extend the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) to the year 2090. As first responders and families who lost loved ones to 9/11 illnesses gathered in the courtroom, we all waited patiently for the vote to come to an end – hoping it would prevent these individuals from sitting in these seats ever again.
