Proving Eligibility for Victim Compensation Fund

It has been nearly 20 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Since that fatal day, over a hundred thousand volunteers, responders, and survivors have found themselves diagnosed with a variety of long-term chronic illnesses, cancers, and respiratory conditions. To help these individuals, Congress opened the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). This fund is the only fund that helps survivors of 9/11 obtain financial compensation for the pain and suffering they endure, plus awards for lost earnings and for wrongful death due a 9/11 disease or cancer.

Can I Amend My VCF Claim to Add a New Condition If I’ve Already Received an Award?

Not all 9/11-related illnesses and medical conditions make themselves known at the same time. Years can go by between the diagnosis of one condition and the diagnosis of a separate 9/11 illness or cancer. Additionally, new conditions continue to be certified as 9/11-related and thus eligible for treatment through the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) and compensation from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF).

The Zadroga Act is named after 9/11 first responder and NYC Police Officer James Zadroga,  who passed away at the age of 34 from a respiratory illness contracted during his nearly 500 hours spent searching the rubble of the World Trade Center following the 9/11 attacks. The act was originally signed into law by President Obama in early 2011, and established the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program, ensuring that those affected by 9/11 receive monitoring and treatment for 9/11-related health problems through 2015.

Why You Should Be Treated By The World Trade Center Health Program And How It Can Help Your 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Claim

The World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) was established under James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010. It provides free health care and medical monitoring for first responders, area workers, residents and survivors who were exposed to the toxic air and debris during 9/11 and the aftermath. Whether or not you have become ill from this exposure you should still seek medical monitoring and/or treatment from this program. Not only is the care free, it can also be a benefit should you plan to file a 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund claim.
